The Government of India has been encouraging the marine sector, due to its potential to become a leading source of livelihood and sustaining food source. With our country blessed with a vast coastline, this industry can become India’s leading revenue generator.

Recently, during the World Fisheries Day celebrations, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala had said that the states will need to co-operate and motivate each other to look for alternatives for the growth of the marine sector. He also stressed on managing sustainability of resources and caring for the environment during fishing. He said that the government is planning a big move to spread information about the benefits of Kisan credit card among fishermen and has already started introducing KCC among them.

The government firmly believes that the strengths of the fisheries sector has been unleashed within a short period and a goal of meeting Rs.1 Lakh Crore exports has been set.

In line with this, Matsya Sampada Yojna has been initiated and Rs.20,000 crore has been sanctioned for its implementation. This initiative aims at making fisherwomen independent, motivating entrepreneurs and promoting seaweed farming.

Five big ports are being expanded into big fishing harbors to help increase fish exports and reach the target of Rs.1 Lakh Crore.

The fish sector in Odisha has been growing rapidly annually at around 13 per cent in the past five years and now forms 2.33 per cent of its revenue by producing 8.73 lakh metric tonnes of fish during the last financial year 2020-21.

The aim now is to concentrate on reducing fish farm inputs costs, expanding the markets for fish and related products and creating an interactive support system to spread awareness of new technologies created exclusively for fish farmers and customers. A goal of achieving 22 million tonnes of fish production by 2025 has been set by the Central Government and farmers and researchers need to work jointly to achieve this goal.
