Aseel is a breed of game chicken native to the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. They lay close to 70 eggs per year. The eggs weigh 40 grams and are a shade that ranges from a cream colour to brown colour. Interestingly, Aseel chicken is a breed that is prominent in cock fights. It is also known to be the world’s first chicken breed.
This breed is now popular across the globe, now found predominantly in Thailand. A simple google search for a fighter/game bird in Thailand displays Aseel as a result. Thailand obtained the germplasm of this breed from Andhra Pradesh and has gone on to standardise Aseel and further develop another breed of fighter birds. The genetic purity of the breed is maintained across the breeding centres in Thailand.
Pakistan lost the Aseel breed they had received from Andhra via Punjab due to cross-breeding it with imported breeds. Thus, Pakistan is now dependent on Thailand for its fighter birds and other poultry needs. This breed of game bird is popular in Vietnam, Australia and Europe. There are several breeds in Europe that also find their roots in the popular Aseel breed from Andhra Pradesh.
Genetic erosion has caused this bird to be considered endangered in India, its home. New and improved hybrid varieties and crosses have enabled this erosion. Their genetic purity is being compromised which have pushed them to the brink of extinction. Researchers have identified the problem and proposed to direct their efforts towards improving productivity without compromising on the characteristics of the breed. The breeding centres of Thailand continue to ensure that the popular legacy of the Aseel bird lives on. The centres have safeguarded the genetic purity of this breed and will continue to do so.
